Consider this an architectural marvel. St Andrew’s in the Square stands proudly. It is a testament to Glasgow’s rich history. This isn’t just another church. It is a symbol of cultural rebirth.

St Andrew’s in the Square is an 18th-century church. It is now Glasgow’s Centre for Scottish Culture. It promotes Scottish music, song, and dance. Its story is one of transformation and resilience.

Construction began in 1739. Master Mason Mungo Naismith built it. Allan Dreghorn designed it. He drew inspiration from St Martin-in-the-Fields in London. St Andrew’s was commissioned by the Tobacco Lords. They wanted to flaunt their wealth.

Imagine this square bustling with Glasgow’s elite. The church was surrounded by fashionable homes. Wealthy merchants lived here. However, times changed. The city expanded westward. The area declined. The church’s congregation dwindled.

St Andrew’s played a part in Scottish history. In 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie camped here. His Jacobite army sheltered within its walls. This happened before the church was even finished. Vincenzo Lunardi took off in a hot air balloon from the churchyard in 1785. The flight landed in Hawick. Agnes Maclehose married here in 1776. She is better known as Clarinda. Her love letters to Robert Burns inspired “Ae Fond Kiss”.

The last religious service was in 1993. The Glasgow Building Preservation Trust acquired St Andrew’s. They transformed it into a cultural center. Victorian additions were removed. The original airy feel was restored. A basement café was added. There are also dressing rooms and rehearsal spaces.

St Andrew’s in the Square reopened on St Andrew’s Day in 2000. It has won several awards. These include the Europa Nostra Diploma. It also won the Civic Trust Commendation.

Think of the music and dance that now fill this space. St Andrew’s in the Square is alive again. It stands as a symbol of Glasgow’s enduring spirit. A place where history and culture meet.
