Walden 7

Oddly enough, Walden 7 isn’t named after a person or a place. It takes its name from a utopian novel, “Walden Two”, inspired by Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden”. Right here before us stands Walden 7, a unique apartment building designed by Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura in 1975. Located in Sant Just Desvern, just outside Barcelona, Walden 7 is an architectural marvel, a testament to Bofill’s vision of communal living. The building itself is a fascinating labyrinth. Eighteen towers, interconnected and slightly offset, create a vertical maze. Seven interconnecting courtyards bring light and air into the heart of the structure. Originally intended as one of five similar blocks, Walden 7 stands alone, a realized fragment of a larger, unrealized dream. Imagine living here. Each apartment, built using modular units, is adaptable, able to shift and change as families grow or shrink. The smallest units are cozy 30 square meter studios. Larger apartments combine multiple modules, creating spacious and flexible living areas. Walden 7 was designed with small windows, a feature that contributes to its fortress-like exterior. The original red tile facade, unfortunately, proved to be a hazard. The tiles, affixed with the wrong adhesive, had a tendency to fall off. During a 1995 renovation, most of the tiles were replaced with red paint. The only remaining tiles cling to the small balconies, a reminder of the building’s original skin. The interior, however, bursts with color. Vibrant blues, purples, and yellows create a cheerful contrast to the austere exterior. Walden 7 is more than just an apartment building. It’s a microcosm of a community, offering shared spaces and public areas designed to foster interaction and connection between residents. Though a private residence, Walden 7 offers public tours. These tours provide a glimpse into Bofill’s unique vision and a chance to experience this architectural icon from the inside. The tram stop nearby is even named “Walden”, a testament to the building’s enduring presence in the local landscape. Walden 7.
