In 1969, a seed was planted in Wedel, just outside Hamburg. This seed was the Fachhochschule Wedel, a unique institution in the German educational landscape. Fachhochschule Wedel is one of the few private, yet non-profit, universities of applied sciences in Germany. It began as the Physics and Technical School (PTL) Wedel. This school transformed into what we know today as Fachhochschule Wedel. This marked the beginning of university-level education at this location. Interestingly, the PTL Wedel continues to exist as a partner institution of the Fachhochschule Wedel. The university began with a single program: Computer Engineering. In 1979, Business Informatics was added. The Fachhochschule Wedel is a family affair. Founded by Helmut Harms, leadership passed to his son, Dirk Harms, in 1977. Now, the grandson, Eike Harms, presides over the university. Over the years, Fachhochschule Wedel has blossomed. New buildings have sprouted. A non-profit organization acts as a private sponsor. A development association was formed. Study abroad programs and dual study models were introduced. Fachhochschule Wedel now offers a rich array of bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science, technology, and economics. Around 1350 students currently call this university home. From its humble beginnings, Fachhochschule Wedel has grown into a vibrant center of learning and innovation. It continues to cultivate the minds of future generations.
