Envision the heart of Medina. Here before you stands Al Awali Mosque a place of deep historical and spiritual resonance.

Al Awali Mosque is not directly mentioned in the provided texts. Yet its story is interwoven with the larger narrative of Medina’s mosques and Islamic heritage.

The Prophet’s Mosque Arabic: Al-Masjid al-Nabawi is the second holiest site in Islam. It is only surpassed by the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. This makes Medina a focal point for pilgrims.

Muhammad himself established the Prophet’s Mosque in 622 AD. This act marked a turning point for the city. The mosque served not only as a place of worship. It was also a community center. A court of law. A religious school.

Initially the mosque was an open-air building. Over time Islamic rulers expanded and embellished it. They dedicated walls doors and minarets to their names and ancestors. This evolution showcases the changing architectural styles and priorities of different eras.

One pivotal expansion occurred during the reign of the Umayyad caliph al-Walid I. He sought to enlarge the mosque significantly. This acknowledged Medina’s roots and possibly appeased local resentment over the city’s declining political status.

The expansion involved demolishing homes of Muhammad’s wives and incorporating their graves. This decision faced vocal opposition. Al-Walid I however proceeded with the project. It was a testament to the complex interplay of religious significance and political power.

Minarets a relatively new architectural feature were introduced. These towers may have been the first in Islamic architecture. The Abbasid caliph al-Mahdi further extended the mosque to the north. Subsequent rulers like al-Mutawakkil added marble to Muhammad’s tomb enclosure.

During the Ottoman period Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent rebuilt the east and west walls. He also added a new minaret. Later Sultan Mahmud II completed the construction of the Purified Residence and covered it with a green dome.

This Green Dome remains one of the most recognizable features of the Prophet’s Mosque. Its origins trace back to 1817. It symbolizes the tomb of Muhammad.

However not all periods were marked by expansion and beautification. The rise of the Wahhabis in the early 19th century brought a wave of iconoclasm. They demolished nearly every tomb and dome in Medina. Only the Green Dome was spared possibly due to its hardened structure or Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab’s reservations.

Under Saudi rule the mosque has undergone major modifications. King Abdulaziz ordered demolitions to create new wings. Later King Fahd expanded the area significantly. These modern expansions aimed to accommodate the growing number of worshippers.

Today the Prophet’s Mosque can accommodate up to two million worshippers. Its architecture blends historical elements with modern amenities. Sliding domes and umbrella tents provide shade and comfort.
