Built in 1957 Morningside Gardens stands as a testament to urban planning. It replaced a slum. It housed approximately 980 apartments. This wasn’t just any housing project. It was a vision. A vision spearheaded by David Rockefeller and Grayson Kirk. They aimed to create a racially integrated community. This vision became a cornerstone for the Mitchell-Lama housing law. The law led to similar cooperative housing projects throughout New York City.

Morningside Gardens offered middle-income families affordable housing. One-third of the first residents worked at nearby educational institutions. They also came from the National Council of Churches. The Gardens aimed for racial harmony. Initially 75% of residents were white. 20% were Black 4% were Asian and 1% were Puerto Rican.

The complex is more than just apartments. It includes a playground. There’s also a fitness center. Storage units are available. Indoor play spaces cater to children and young adults. Bike rooms and a workshop with ceramics and woodworking add to the amenities. Morningside Gardens is a thriving community. It’s nestled near Columbia University Barnard College and the Jewish Theological Seminary. It boasts a low crime rate due to a small security force. In 2013 it partnered with the New York City Department of Sanitation for a food waste composting pilot program. This was even featured on NPR’s The Brian Lehrer Show.

Famous residents include Fiona Apple Robert L Carter and Thurgood Marshall. The latter’s legacy is honored with the Thurgood Marshall Room. Ivy V Polk widow of Oscar Polk a Gone with the Wind actor also called Morningside Gardens home. Morningside Gardens isn’t just a collection of buildings. It’s a piece of New York City history a community built on a dream. A dream of affordable housing racial harmony and a vibrant community life. Today its residents continue to thrive in this unique cooperative. The history of Morningside Gardens is a story of vision innovation and community. It’s a story worth remembering.
