Contrary to popular belief, Palazzo Rho wasn’t always the grand city hall it is today. Originally, Rho was a modest town of 7,000. A royal decree in 1928 drastically changed things. Neighboring municipalities merged with Rho, instantly expanding its population and administrative needs. The old town hall in Via De Amicis couldn’t handle the surge. It became cramped and inadequate. So, between 1929 and 1931, Palazzo Rho, also known as Palazzo Podestarile, was erected in the central Piazza Visconti. It was a testament to the town’s newfound importance. The Palazzo’s design, inspired by Visconti and Sforza castles, boasts Lombard brick, charming bifore windows, and a 30-meter merlated tower. It was completed in a mere 18 months. This rapid construction impressed even the attending Prefect at the inauguration ceremony. It contributed to Rho’s elevation to city status in 1932. Palazzo Rho thus became a symbol of the modern city. The Palazzo’s significance extends beyond its initial role. In 2016, it welcomed Tibetan monks who created a Mandala for the Dalai Lama’s visit. This event led to the Dalai Lama receiving honorary Rho citizenship. The Mandala itself is now displayed within the Palazzo for public viewing. The Palazzo’s design reflects both historical inspiration and modern innovation for its time. While its exterior evokes a glorious past, it was fully wired with telephones, a rarity in the 1930s. It even featured an advanced call system allowing offices to summon staff. Interestingly, the Palazzo’s grand scale served a specific purpose. The high ceilings and interconnected rooms, while now facilitating communication, initially reinforced the authority’s power over the citizens. The public waited in the corridors, unaware of the administrative processes within. This layout contrasted with the transparency of modern governance. Palazzo Rho stands as a symbol of Rho’s transformation from a small village to a thriving city. Its architecture, history, and role in significant events make it a must-see for any visitor.
