Beneath the surface of Flückigersee, secrets sleep. This isn’t just any lake. Flückigersee holds a story as layered as the sediment at its bottom. Flückigersee began not as a natural wonder, but as a gravel pit in the 1920s, carved out by the Flückiger construction company. Imagine the constant rumble of machinery, the dust clouds rising as trucks hauled away the raw materials for Freiburg’s growth. This industrious activity continued until 1983, when the encroaching residential areas silenced the machines. Just a few years later, in 1986, the scarred landscape transformed into part of the Landesgartenschau exhibition, the precursor to today’s Seepark. Flückigersee became a centerpiece, a testament to the city’s ability to reclaim and repurpose. Now, it’s a tranquil oasis, a popular swimming spot, and home to a surprising amount of life. The lake reaches a depth of 25 meters, a hidden abyss holding more than just water. While the water quality is generally good, tiny parasitic worms called cercaria lurk beneath the surface, sometimes causing swimmer’s itch. More intriguing, however, is the story of phosphorus. In the late 1990s, studies revealed high phosphorus levels in Flückigersee. This pointed to an unexpected source: debris from World War II, potentially containing remnants of phosphorus bombs. It’s a chilling reminder of the war’s lasting impact, buried beneath the tranquil surface of the lake. Over the years, Flückigersee has been the subject of various projects. One aimed to control the swan population by strategically feeding “alpha swans” to maintain territorial control and prevent overpopulation. Another involved dedicated volunteers cleaning up debris, even attempting to capture some of the abandoned turtles that now call the lake home. Flückigersee is more than just a lake. It’s a story of transformation, resilience, and hidden depths, both literal and metaphorical. A place where industry gave way to nature, where war’s scars lie hidden beneath the surface, and where the community continues to work to preserve this unique urban oasis.
