Whispers of ancient prayers echo here. The Sinagoga Major de Barcelona stands as a testament to Barcelona’s long Jewish history. It is one of the oldest synagogues in Europe.

Welcome to the Sinagoga Major de Barcelona. This isn’t just a building. It is a journey through time, faith, and resilience.

Imagine Barcelona centuries ago. The Jewish quarter thrived here. The Sinagoga Major was its heart. Archaeological evidence suggests that the original structure dates back to the 3rd or 4th century. It is uncertain if it was a synagogue back then.

The synagogue significantly expanded during the 13th century. Rabbi Shlomo ben Adret led the Sinagoga Major for 50 years. He was a prominent figure in Spanish Jewry. King James I even visited in 1263.

Tragedy struck in 1391. Jews in Barcelona were massacred. The Sinagoga Major was lost and repurposed. Its original purpose faded from memory. Stories accumulated over the centuries concealing its past.

In 1987, Jaume Riera y Sans began a quest. He wanted to rediscover the Sinagoga Major’s location. He meticulously researched old tax records. His work led him to this very spot.

Miguel Iaffa examined the building’s exterior. He noticed it faced Jerusalem. This was a key detail. The eastward orientation defied the street’s layout. Religious requirements dictated this alignment.

Iaffa purchased the building in 1995. The Call Association of Barcelona helped with restoration. They reopened the Sinagoga Major in 2002.

In 2003, a Canadian couple made history. They were the first to marry here in over 600 years. A New York attorney donated a 500-year-old Torah scroll in 2006.

The Sinagoga Major faced more challenges. In 2009, a right-wing extremist attacked it. He injured a synagogue employee. The community stood strong against hate.

Today, the Sinagoga Major serves as a museum and a place for special occasions. While regular prayers are not held here, the Sinagoga Major is used for B’nei Mitzvah and weddings. It is a symbol of Jewish heritage in Barcelona. Its walls hold centuries of stories. Its existence is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Jewish community.

Take a moment to reflect on the history. Consider the resilience and faith. The Sinagoga Major de Barcelona stands as a reminder of the past and a beacon for the future.
