Inside, a vertical campus encourages collaboration. From the “CDS public square” on the lower levels to the classrooms, labs, and research spaces above, the design promotes interaction. The Center for Computing & Data Sciences Building holds the distinction of being Boston’s largest green building. It operates fossil-fuel-free, utilizing a closed-loop geothermal system for heating and cooling. Exterior shades mitigate solar heat gain, while the interior boasts low-VOC finishes for improved air quality. “Irresistible staircases” encourage physical activity, and the building’s elevated foundation addresses concerns about rising water levels. The Center for Computing & Data Sciences Building has garnered recognition for its unconventional design, receiving numerous awards since 2019. Its dramatic form is visible even from across the Charles River in Cambridge, a unique addition to the Boston skyline. Inside, BU Spark, an experiential learning lab, supports student technology projects and applied research.
