Did the name John Duns Scotus ever cross your mind before you stood here, before Blessed John Duns Scotus RC Church? This modern church, completed in 1975, stands in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. It’s a significant landmark, not just for its architecture, but for the fascinating history it holds. Blessed John Duns Scotus Church wasn’t the first Catholic church on this site. It was built where St. Luke’s Church once stood. The church we see today became the sole Catholic church in Gorbals after a major local redevelopment project. Other churches in the area closed, leaving Blessed John Duns Scotus RC Church as the spiritual center. The Franciscans, or the Order of Friars Minor, have served this parish since the church’s completion. It’s noteworthy as the only Catholic church in Scotland under Franciscan guidance. The church holds Sunday Masses at convenient times: Saturday at 5:30 pm, and Sunday at 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, and 6:00 pm. Blessed John Duns Scotus RC Church also safeguards a remarkable relic: the forearm of St. Valentine. This relic was originally housed in St. Francis’ Church, another Franciscan church in Glasgow, built in 1868. It was gifted by a French Catholic family. When St. Francis’ Church closed in 1998, the relic was moved to its current home at Blessed John Duns Scotus Church. There’s a curious story surrounding the relic. For a period, it was kept in a simple cardboard box, placed atop a wardrobe. It was rediscovered in 1999 and appropriately labeled “Corpus Valentini Martyris,” reflecting its sacred significance. Tragedy struck Blessed John Duns Scotus RC Church in 2005 when a fire damaged the building. After extensive repairs, it reopened in 2010. Archbishop Mario Conti of Glasgow celebrated a special Mass to mark the occasion, a testament to the church’s enduring importance to the community. So, as you stand before Blessed John Duns Scotus RC Church, consider not just the modern building, but the rich layers of history within. It’s a story of community, faith, and resilience, woven into the fabric of Glasgow.
