Thirsty? Then you’ve come to the right place. Right here at the Font de Canaletes.

This isn’t just any fountain. This is Barcelona’s iconic Font de Canaletes a symbol of the city itself. It stands proudly at the top of La Rambla near Plaça Catalunya.

The original fountain? It was much older than this one. It stemmed from a reservoir in the Tower of San Severo. This tower was part of Barcelona’s ancient medieval wall. The tower had a cistern called Canaletas. That’s where the fountain gets its name. Multiple channels flowed from it to other fountains in the area. The wall was demolished in the 19th century. The original fountain disappeared in 1862. Two iron fountains temporarily replaced it. Then in 1888 city hall commissioned a permanent replacement. Pere Falqués initially designed four lamppost-fountains. Later Jaume Rodelles designed this one in 1892.

Made of cast iron the Font de Canaletes is beautiful. It has a circular base. A round trunk stands on the base. Four basins surround the trunk each with its own faucet. An elegant lamppost with four lanterns tops the structure.

But the Font de Canaletes is more than just pretty. It’s a meeting place. For decades FC Barcelona fans have gathered here after victories. The tradition started in the 1930s. Fans would check the scores at La Rambla a sports magazine’s office across from the fountain. A chalkboard displayed the results. This tradition continues to this day.

There’s a legend too. They say anyone who drinks from the fountain will return to Barcelona. So take a sip. Maybe you’ll be back.

The Font de Canaletes. It’s more than just water. It’s a piece of Barcelona’s heart. A symbol of celebration and hope a testament to the city’s enduring spirit.
