In March 1948 Saint Paul started as a mission with just 12 members. By October of the same year Rev. G.C. Northern moved the church to a new location. It was at 2417 Burnett Way. The church grew steadily nurturing a growing congregation.
In 1957 Saint Paul Baptist Church agreed to purchase property. It was the property of First Southern Baptist Church. This marked a significant step. The church moved to 4020 12th Avenue in Oak Park.
May 1971 marked a pivotal moment in Saint Paul’s history. Dr. Rev. Ephraim Williams began his service as pastor. Under his leadership the church experienced remarkable growth. It went from 135 parishioners to about 4000. His impact extended far beyond the church walls.
In 1993 the members of Saint Paul marched to their new place of worship. This was its current location. This move symbolized their unwavering commitment. Eleven years later Saint Paul broke ground on the Family Life Center. It was named after Rev. Williams.
In October 2019 parishioners voted for Rev. Reece to succeed Rev. Williams. He had previously served as the church’s first full-time staff minister. Rev. Reece’s return marked a new chapter for Saint Paul.
However, Saint Paul has faced challenges. In 2020 the church was named in a lawsuit. It alleged sexual abuse. The allegations involved a former staff member. They also involved the handling of the situation by church leadership. Despite these challenges Saint Paul Baptist Church continues to serve its community. It strives to uphold its values.
