Founded in 1964 the Greater Rose of Sharon Baptist Church stands tall in Detroit. Its presence is a testament to enduring faith and community spirit. This wasn’t always the case. The church’s journey began much earlier. In 1957 a small children’s ministry blossomed into a full church. This ministry was led by several dedicated mothers. They recognized a need for youth programs in the neighborhood. They wanted to nurture young hearts and minds. Rev. John L. Railback a licensed and ordained minister played a pivotal role. He was encouraged to establish a church at this location. Eight charter members including Rev. Railback’s own family members and several other devout individuals answered the call. They formed a Baptist mission. With guidance from Rev. Wade of True Faith Missionary Baptist Church the group officially became the Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church. Mother Duell suggested the name. It’s a beautiful and appropriate name suggesting comfort and growth. The church elected its first officers. These dedicated individuals included Rev Railback as pastor Bernice Haymond as clerk and secretary and Louellen Railback as president of the mission society. This was just the beginning of a remarkable legacy. The church purchased its first building in 1962. This required fundraising efforts. It was renovated and dedicated to worship. Despite facing challenges such as illness the church persevered. In 1965 it joined the National Baptist Convention USA Inc. This broadened its reach and impact. It expanded further acquiring adjacent properties. These were later used to host Sunday school classes offices and the pastor’s study. Rose of Sharon has also engaged in extensive building programs. These renovations modernized the building over the years. The Greater Rose of Sharon Baptist Church has served the community for decades. It has been a source of spiritual guidance and community support. It’s a place of comfort and hope a true beacon in Detroit’s rich tapestry. The church continues to thrive. It remains a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It is a vital part of the Detroit landscape.
