Founded in 1922 the United Community Methodist Church of Pacific Palisades stands before you. Its history is deeply intertwined with the very fabric of this neighborhood. This wasn’t just a church it was the seed from which Pacific Palisades blossomed. Methodist missionaries envisioned a unique community. They sought not just a place of worship but a sprawling haven. A space for religious education summer camps and a thriving youth institute.

Initially their services were held in tents nestled within Temescal Canyon. Imagine the rugged beauty the simplicity of worship under the open sky. This wasn’t some grand plan from the start. They were pioneers forging a path through brush and dreams. Their perseverance led to the purchase of 1100 acres. A significant investment that laid the groundwork for a bustling community. The sale of their previous location in Huntington Beach fuelled this ambition. The proceeds helped them acquire this land from the Santa Monica Land and Water Company. It was a strategic move a calculated risk.

The groundbreaking for the church building took place on August 18 1929. It cost $35000 a substantial amount for that era. Seventy-three charter members formed the core of the congregation a testament to their shared vision. This original structure later became the Fellowship Hall and Sunday school. A new sanctuary hall was constructed in 1952 reflecting the church’s growth and influence. Further expansions occurred in the late 1960s to accommodate the ever-increasing membership. The church even became a filming location appearing in episodes of popular TV series such as Jane the Virgin and New Girl.

The United Community Methodist Church wasn’t just a building it was a beacon of hope and community. It weathered the storms of the Great Depression and played an integral role in the development of Pacific Palisades. Sadly the church suffered significant damage in the Palisades Fire of January 2025. It is a stark reminder of the community’s resilience. Yet its story continues. It stands as a testament to enduring faith and the power of community. A reminder of the enduring spirit of the people who built it and those who continue to nurture it today.
