Lost in thought, these caged figures stand before us. This is Una Habitació on sempre Plou. It translates to “A Room Where it Always Rains”. This sculpture is located in Plaça del Mar. It sits near Sant Miquel beach in La Barceloneta.

Una Habitació on sempre Plou opened in 1992. It was part of Barcelona’s Olympic Games renovation. The city wanted a permanent contemporary sculpture exhibition. This exhibition would inhabit the reformed seafront.

The artist behind Una Habitació on sempre Plou was Juan Muñoz. He was born in Madrid. He gained international recognition for his work. His sculptures often feature figures smaller than life-size.

Una Habitació on sempre Plou features five bronze human figures. They stand within a caged structure. Their bases are spherical. Each figure seems isolated. They look in different directions. This arrangement represents isolation. It mirrors the individual isolation in modern society. People are physically close but emotionally distant. Sandstone and leafy trees surround the sculpture. They appear to protect or even hide it. These elements are also part of the artwork.

Interestingly, Una Habitació on sempre Plou is unfinished. An irrigation system was planned. It was to create rain inside the cage. A leaf extraction system was also intended. Technical issues delayed the installation. Sadly, Juan Muñoz passed away before completion. Without his approval, the work remained unfinished. The original name was kept to honor him.

The title, Una Habitació on sempre Plou, is now ironic. It does not rain inside the cage. The trees act as natural umbrellas. They shield the structure from the rain.

In 2004, the sculpture was temporarily removed. It was to build a parking area. It was reinstalled later on a marble base. The base was slightly higher than the original.

Consider Una Habitació on sempre Plou. It is a statement about modern life. It is a tribute to an artist’s vision. It serves as a reminder of our shared yet separate existences.
