He was a political activist, a writer, and a true visionary. Witnessing the perilous lives of coral divers ignited a spark in him. He envisioned a safer way to explore the ocean’s depths. This led him to design the Ictíneo I, a wooden submarine crafted with his father’s carpentry skills. The A Narcís Monturiol monument captures his spirit, a bronze figure holding the blueprints of his groundbreaking creation. The Ictíneo I, a 7-meter marvel, took its first plunge in Barcelona’s harbor in 1859. It allowed for the easier harvest of coral. While its speed was limited by human power, its maneuverability was impressive. Monturiol’s success inspired him to create the Ictíneo II. This submarine was powered by a revolutionary steam engine. It used an anaerobic chemical reaction, generating both heat and oxygen. This air-independent engine was a breakthrough, decades ahead of its time. The Ictíneo II achieved a top speed of 4.5 knots. Tragically, despite numerous successful test voyages, financial struggles forced the sale of the Ictíneo II for scrap. The A Narcís Monturiol monument stands as a testament to his ingenuity.
