Here stands Bàrcino. This sculpture spells out the ancient name of Barcelona. The Bàrcino Statue stands as a testament to the city’s rich Roman past.

Barcelona traces its origins back over 2000 years. It began as a Roman colony called Barcino. Emperor Augustus founded it between 15 and 10 BC. Its full Latin name was Iulia Augusta Faventia Paterna Barcino.

The Romans chose the top of Mount Taber. This small hill overlooks the sea. It also overlooks the plain where Plaça de Sant Jaume is today. The colony grew rapidly.

The Bàrcino Statue reminds us of this era. The colony of Barcino was less important than other Roman towns. Tarraco and Caesaraugusta were larger.

A wall was built around Barcino. This happened between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. It was reinforced later. By the second century AD, Barcino had a population of 3500 to 5000.

The main economic activity was cultivation. They widely exported Barcino wine. Today the Bàrcino Statue stands in Plaça Nova.

Plaça Nova features sections of the Roman wall. There are also two square towers from the second city wall. Carriages and pedestrians once entered the city here. They used the main gate called Porta Praetoria.

Carrer del Bisbe begins here. It follows the route of Decamanus Maximus. This was one of the two main streets in Barcino. The Bàrcino Statue marks this important location.

The Barcelona City Council Archaeology Service created the Bàrcino Plan. This lists excavation sites. You can see where the Barcino wall ran. The Bàrcino Statue is part of this history.

Many remains of Barcino exist today. You can find them in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. The Temple of Augustus is another striking site. It was built in the 1st century AD.

The Museu d’Història de Barcelona houses extensive excavations. You can walk the ancient streets of Barcino. See Roman laundromats and bathhouses. Discover wine shops and a fish factory.

The Via Sepulcral Romana provides evidence of funerary practices. It was discovered during restorations in the 1950s. Ninety-five tombs were found.

Plaça Ramon Berenguer conserves a stretch of the ancient city walls. These walls were 16 meters high. They had 74 watchtowers. The Bàrcino Statue invites reflection on the city’s past.

The Catalan Museum of Archaeology houses Roman artifacts. Mosaics and sculptures are on display. These show how Barcelona has evolved.

The Bàrcino Statue is more than metal. It is a symbol of Barcelona’s enduring history. It links the modern city to its ancient roots. It reminds us of the people who lived here long ago.
