Ten meters long and undeniably captivating that’s the Gamba sculpture. Right here before you stands this giant prawn a creation of artist Javier Mariscal. It’s more than just a seafood-themed monument though.

The Gamba isn’t your average prawn. It was originally perched atop the Gambrinus restaurant in 1988. The restaurant was one of five that opened after a massive Port Vell renovation. This was part of the buildup to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Clever isn’t it? The Gamba acted as a giant advertisement avoiding a ban on rooftop signs.

Mariscal even added a quirky touch. He gave the prawn lobster claws instead of shrimp claws. It’s a playful detail adding to the sculpture’s whimsical nature. After ten years the restaurants closed. The city council bought the Gamba. They restored it placing it back in 2004 in its original spot.

Today the Gamba is a beloved sight for both locals and tourists. It’s a reminder of Barcelona’s exciting transformation. It embodies the city’s vibrant spirit and playful creativity. For Barcelonians it’s a symbol of a bygone era. It’s a testament to how a simple idea can become an iconic piece of art.
