Whispers of emperors and echoes of ancient rituals. That’s what I sense standing before Guangjiao Yangshi Dazongci, or as it’s sometimes called, the Yangshi Temple. This Taoist temple, nestled in the heart of Guangjiao in northern Beijiao, has witnessed centuries of history unfold. Built during the Qing Dynasty around 1800, it stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and tradition. The temple was meticulously restored in 2005, breathing new life into its ancient bones. Imagine the countless worshippers who have passed through its gates, seeking solace and connection to the divine. Guangjiao Yangshi Dazongci sits facing west, its three-room facade belying a much larger structure. It stretches back in three sections, covering a total area of 742 square meters and occupying over 2000 square meters of land. The main building is 17 meters wide and an impressive 43.65 meters deep. The temple’s hard-ridge roof is adorned with grey tiles and intricate cloud and dragon patterns. Flanking the main structure are two Qingyun alleys, adding to the sense of tranquility and reverence. Sadly, only the front section and the second section of the original structure remain today. However, these remnants offer a glimpse into the temple’s former grandeur. The front section, with its three-room width of 17 meters, boasts a spacious layout. The entrance, a Bogu-style ridge head door, is framed by a striking Baotou base. The white marble columns and carved beams, along with the meticulously crafted swirling lotus leaf designs on the sealing source boards, showcase the exceptional craftsmanship of the Qing Dynasty. The second section of Guangjiao Yangshi Dazongci extends 13.35 meters deep, its walls, roof style, and murals mirroring the front section. Massive wooden beams and ironwood columns, some as thick as 50 centimeters, support the structure. A seven-frame beam rests upon a central Guzhu-style column and eight-prism bird’s beak stone pillars in the front, reflecting distinct Ming Dynasty characteristics. The front and back eaves extend outwards by four steps, creating a dramatic overhang and sheltering the interior scroll shed. Guangjiao Yangshi Dazongci is more than just a temple. It’s a living embodiment of history, a place where the past whispers secrets to the present. On January 8th, 2006, it was designated as a protected cultural heritage site in the Shunde District. This recognition underscores its importance as a cultural treasure.
