What if I told you this fountain has a secret? The Font del Geni Català isn’t just a pretty monument. It has a tale of hidden meanings and a brush with censorship.
The Font del Geni Català stands proudly in the Pla de Palau. It is a neoclassical fountain with sculptures. It was built to honor Francisco Bernaldo de Quirós y Mariño de Lobera. He was the Marquis de Campo Sagrado. He brought water from the Sierra de Moncada to Barcelona in 1826.
The city decided to erect a monument to him in 1852. Architect Francesc Daniel Molina designed it. Construction began that year. The Font del Geni Català was inaugurated on June 1 1856. Sculptors Fausto Baratta and Josep Anicet Santigosa created the sculptures.
Look closely at the Font del Geni Català. It is made of white marble. An winged ephebe statue stands atop a tall pedestal. The statue holds the star of Progress above its head. In its left hand, it carries a palm of victory. An anchor and a gear wheel symbolize technology. Four seated matrons surround the base. They represent the Catalan provinces. Water flows from lion heads. These symbolize the Ebro, Segre, Llobregat and Ter rivers. The water cascades into four pools. These pools then drain into the main basin.
The pedestal displays a coat of arms. It is surrounded by laurel branches. The arms of Quirós are there. The motto reads “After God, the house of Quirós”. Four genies ride sea horses in the pool. These details all contribute to the Font del Geni Català’s beauty.
Originally, the Font del Geni Català had gaslights. The fountain underwent several restorations in the 20th century. Frederic Marès completed the most important restoration after the Civil War.
The winged figure at the top represents the “Catalan genius”. The star is an emblem of progress. The palm symbolizes victory. The anchor represents the aquatic. The gear wheel symbolizes industry and technology.
Legend says the angel was so well-endowed that locals flocked to admire him. The bishop ordered his castration. Later, a marble veil covered the area. This veil has since been removed.
