Gazing upon Ermita Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, can you hear the echoes of history? This unassuming chapel, nestled in El Álamo, whispers tales of kings, saints, and the unwavering faith of a community. Ermita Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a testament to time, a beacon of hope, and a silent observer of centuries of change. The oldest building in El Álamo, Ermita Nuestra Señora de la Soledad dates back to the 16th century. It has seen countless transformations, yet its essence remains. Originally situated along the Camino Real de Extremadura, its location and access to fresh water from its well made it a welcome respite for travelers. One night in 1619, Ermita Nuestra Señora de la Soledad played host to a very important guest. King Philip III of Spain, gravely ill upon his return from Portugal, was resting in Casarrubios. Fearing for the king’s life, his physicians sought the intercession of San Isidro Labrador. The saint’s body was transported from the court to meet the ailing monarch. The journey took them along the Camino Real, and the harsh autumn weather forced several stops. One of these was at El Álamo, at Ermita Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. The chronicles tell of the villagers’ joy at the presence of the saint’s remains, and the subsequent recovery of the king. The people of El Álamo were so moved by this event that they requested masses be held at the Ermita. Their devotion to the image of Our Lady of Solitude led to the creation of “inventories of jewels”. These detailed the sacred objects and liturgical vestments exclusively used within Ermita Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. Inside, the centerpiece is a retablo showcasing the image of Our Lady of Solitude. Ermita Nuestra Señora de la Soledad stands today, a quiet sentinel of faith, its history interwoven with the story of El Álamo itself. It is protected under Spanish heritage law, a recognition of its enduring significance.
