Casa Sayrach

Did you ever hear of a house nicknamed “The House of Cream”? Right here on the corner of Avinguda Diagonal and Carrer d’Enric Granados stands Casa Sayrach, affectionately known as such due to its creamy Montjuïc stone facade and the unique shape of its white, Vilanova stone mansard roof. Casa Sayrach, completed in 1918, is a beautiful example of late Catalan Modernism. It’s a captivating blend of organic forms and anatomical lines. The architect, Manuel Sayrach i Carreras, a supporter of republicanism and a rising star in Barcelona’s cultural scene, designed Casa Sayrach before he even finished his architecture degree. Though the plans were signed by Gabriel Borrell, the project is attributed to Sayrach. Notice the distinct corner, accentuated by a semicircular volume of bay windows and topped with a rounded turret. This design, along with the undulating lines of the facade, reveals the influence of Antoni Gaudí, a master architect whom Sayrach deeply admired. The entrance, graced by a bay window beneath a parabolic arch, adds to the building’s charm. While much of Casa Sayrach is private, a peek through the main door’s glass offers a glimpse into the fantastical hallway. Its organic forms, inspired by stalactites, tentacles, leaves, and marine creatures, create a sense of movement and wonder. Sayrach embraced the concept of “total art,” believing that various art forms could intertwine to create a single, unified work. This philosophy is evident throughout Casa Sayrach. The building’s soft, sinuous lines and nature-inspired shapes reflect the romantic spirit of Catalan Modernism. Interestingly, Casa Sayrach was built at a time when the Noucentisme style, a reaction against Modernism, was gaining prominence. Perhaps this explains why Sayrach’s work, though undeniably beautiful and unique, is less widely known than some of his contemporaries. So, next time you stroll down Avinguda Diagonal, remember the “House of Cream,” Casa Sayrach. It stands as a testament to Sayrach’s talent and the enduring allure of Catalan Modernism.
