Can a statue whisper tales across centuries? Here at the Marko Marulić Statue in Berlin, it seems so. This towering bronze figure, sculpted by Slavomir Drinković, isn’t just a monument. It’s a bridge between cultures, a testament to literary greatness, and a symbol of a lasting friendship. The Marko Marulić Statue, standing tall in the Wilmersdorf-Charlottenburg borough, commemorates the “father of Croatian literature”. Marko Marulić, who lived from 1450 to 1524 in Split, Croatia, was a prominent figure of the European Renaissance. His influence extended far beyond his homeland. He even penned the first known mention of the term “psychology” in his work “Psichiologia de ratione animae humanae”. The statue itself is a gift from Split, Berlin’s sister city since 1970. This bond, forged during a time of political division, played a key role in the statue’s creation. In 1998, during an official visit, Ivo Sanader initiated the project. Berlin’s major, Michael Wrasmann, embraced the idea in 2000. This year marked not only the 30th anniversary of the cities’ partnership but also the 550th anniversary of Marulić’s birth. The Marko Marulić Statue was unveiled on May 27, 2000, on Julius-Morgenroth-Platz. Every year, around August 18th, the area around the statue comes alive. Berlin’s Croatian community gathers to celebrate Marulić’s birthday, paying homage to their literary heritage. They honor the man whose words resonated through Europe, a testament to the enduring power of language and culture. The Marko Marulić Statue serves as a reminder. It reminds us of the connections we forge, the legacies we celebrate, and the stories that continue to whisper across time.
