Have you ever heard of a shrine dedicated to safe childbirth and the well-being of children? Right here in Kyoto, nestled amidst the bustling streets, stands the 水天宮巡拝所, the Suitengu Shrine.

This shrine has a long and fascinating history, dating back to the Edo period. It was founded by the Arima family, lords of the Kurume Domain, who wanted to ensure safe childbirth for their people. Legend has it that the shrine was built on a site where a water deity, Suiten, was said to reside.

The shrine became very popular, and people from all over Kyoto would come to pray for safe pregnancies and healthy babies. During the Edo period, women would tie a rope called a suzu-no-o, which is a bell rope, around their waists as a maternity belt while they prayed, believing that this would ensure a safe delivery.

Today, the Suitengu Shrine remains a popular destination, especially for expectant mothers who come to pray for safe childbirth and the health of their children. The shrine also holds special ceremonies for children, like the first baby visit and the Shichi-Go-San festival.

Throughout the years, the shrine has been renovated several times. The most recent renovation was in 2018, when it was rebuilt to incorporate modern seismic isolation technology to protect it from earthquakes.

Standing here before this beautiful shrine, you can practically feel the energy of the past and the hope that flows through it. It’s a place of peace and serenity, where people have come for centuries to seek blessings and find solace.

So take some time to wander through the grounds, admire the serene atmosphere, and maybe even whisper a prayer of your own. You never know what wonders await you.
