Through these grand iron gates Eusebi Güell and his guests once entered the Palau Güell. This is not just a building it’s a testament to Antoni Gaudí’s genius. Built between 1886 and 1888 this palace stands as one of Gaudí’s early masterpieces. It was commissioned by the wealthy industrialist Eusebi Güell a patron of the arts who gave Gaudí remarkable creative freedom.

Notice the parabolic arch and intricate ironwork resembling seaweed and a horsewhip. Carriages rolled through these gates directly to the stables in the basement. Servants lived below while the guests ascended to the opulent reception rooms. Discreet viewing windows high on the walls allowed the Güell family to observe their guests before greeting them. A clever way to prepare for their arrival wasn’t it?

The main reception hall is breathtaking. Its high ceiling is punctuated by small openings. At night lanterns hung outside casting a magical starlit effect. This was Gaudí’s design. He wanted to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Every detail from the ornate walls and ceilings to the meticulously crafted furniture speaks to Gaudí’s unique artistry. The Palau Güell is more than just a home it’s an experience.

The Palau Güell’s innovative features are equally striking. There were ramps for horses allowing Güell to reach the stables and the chapel atop the building without dismounting. This speaks volumes about its luxury. The building’s design was incredibly forward-thinking for its time. Even the location was unique. The palace stood in the heart of El Raval a bustling and sometimes rough neighborhood. This highlights the extraordinary wealth of Güell.

Sadly the Palau Güell wasn’t used much as a family home. Instead it became a venue for high-society events. Despite its unusual history the palace has endured. After a period of closure for renovations it’s now fully open to the public. You can witness its beauty and marvel at Gaudí’s unparalleled vision. Its beauty has even captivated the world of cinema. The Palau Güell served as a striking backdrop in Michelangelo Antonioni’s film The Passenger.
