In 1914, a new administrative district emerged in Seoul. This district, initially called Yeonhui-myeon, became part of Goyang County, Gyeonggi Province. Now, we stand before the Sinchon-dong Community Service Center, a key part of the modern Sinchon-dong in Seoul’s Seodaemun District. Sinchon-dong encompasses not only this administrative building but also areas like Daehyeon-dong, Buk-Ahyeon-dong, Sinchon-dong, Bongwon-dong, and Changcheon-dong. The very name “Sinchon,” meaning “New Village,” reflects its relatively recent development. The area around Sinchon-dong Community Service Center transformed significantly in 2008. It was then officially separated from Daehyeon-dong, becoming its own distinct entity within the administrative structure of Seoul. Sinchon-dong is known for its youthful energy. It’s a hub for universities and entertainment venues, attracting students and young professionals. This bustling atmosphere has contributed to its dynamic identity. Interestingly, the name “Sinchon” originates from the older name “Saetindae.” “Saetindae” referred to a shrine believed to house the spirit of a serpent. This serpent was thought to bring rain and thus held significant importance for the local community. This historical anecdote offers a glimpse into the rich history embedded within Sinchon-dong, adding another layer to its modern image. Sinchon-dong Community Service Center serves as an important administrative center for this vibrant community. It plays a crucial role in connecting the residents to essential public services and facilitating local governance.
