Nestled along the Ujigawa River, 市立南部小学校 has witnessed Uji’s transformation. 市立南部小学校 first opened its doors in April 1971. It was built as the twelfth municipal elementary school in Uji. The burgeoning population of East Uji and the overcrowded Uji Elementary School necessitated its construction. Originally, 市立南部小学校 was temporarily housed within Uji Elementary School. Construction delays meant the intended building wasn’t ready. A prefabricated school building on the Uji Elementary grounds served as a temporary home. This sparked criticism from parents who felt the city’s planning was inadequate. Even after moving to its permanent location in February 1972, expansion continued. The school saw additions and renovations in 1973, 1975, 1976, and 1979.
