Did Monty the Maverick always dream of a bronze likeness? Here at Lone Star College-Montgomery, we stand before the Monty Maverick Statue. It’s more than just a statue. It’s a symbol of school spirit, a testament to a naming contest, and a nod to the college’s mascot. Lone Star College-Montgomery unveiled its new mascot at its 15th-anniversary celebration. It was a white horse, a maverick, with a flowing blue mane and tail. But the maverick needed a name. The college launched an online submission process. Over 100 names poured in. One name, however, rose above the rest: Monty. A shortened version of Montgomery, Monty resonated with students, faculty, and staff. Dean Steve Scheffler noted that Monty received four times the submissions of the second-most popular choice. The creation of the Monty Maverick Statue was the next step. The college aimed to make Monty a fixture not just on campus, but in the community as well. An invitation to a community event? Monty would be there. So, the next time you see the Monty Maverick Statue, remember its journey from nameless mascot to bronze icon. It’s a reminder of the power of community and the spirit of a maverick.
