“I never met a man I didn’t like.” Those famous words of Will Rogers still resonate here at the Will Rogers Home. This isn’t just a house. It’s a piece of American history. A testament to a man who charmed the nation with his humor and down-to-earth nature.

The Will Rogers Home nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains was more than just a residence. It was a reflection of the man himself. Imagine a 31-room ranch house eleven baths and seven fireplaces. A true testament to his success as a cowboy humorist and movie star. The house was surrounded by a stable corrals a riding ring roping arena and even a golf course and polo field. The 186 acres offered riding and hiking trails giving visitors breathtaking views.

Will Rogers built this ranch with his wife Betty and their three children Will Jr Mary and James. They lived here in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles. This wasn’t just a lavish estate. It was a working ranch. It reflected his love of horses and the outdoors. He entertained friends at casual barbecues and sing-alongs. The living room showcased his collection of Native American rugs and baskets and original Western art. Even a mounted calf sat there a gift meant to encourage his roping skills.

The Will Rogers Home wasn’t just a family home. It was a hub of activity. The polo field for instance was the only regulation-size outdoor polo field in Los Angeles County. The ranch was frequently used as a movie and television set. Star Trek IV for example used the ranch as a stand-in for Golden Gate Park.

Sadly in January 2025 the Will Rogers Home along with other structures was destroyed by the Palisades Wildfire. The fire tragically claimed this historical landmark leaving only memories and photos behind. Yet even in destruction the story of Will Rogers and his home continues to inspire. The Will Rogers Ranch Foundation is working to preserve his legacy. Their efforts ensure the memory of the home and its inhabitants continue to thrive. They show the enduring spirit of Will Rogers. A man who is fondly remembered for his charm and humanity.
