Rumors swirl around Deera Square. Some call it Justice Square. Others whisper the name Chop-Chop Square. Here at Deera Square in Riyadh, the weight of history hangs heavy. Deera Square sits next to the al-Hukm Palace and Imam Turki bin Abdullah Grand Mosque. This location, in the heart of Riyadh, has witnessed a stark side of Saudi Arabian justice. For years, Deera Square was the site of public executions. Those condemned to death by the Saudi Arabian legal system were brought here. Their sentences were carried out by beheading. Following the execution, the head would be sewn back onto the body. The deceased would then be prepared for final rites. While public executions drew large crowds in the past, they became less frequent over time. By 2022, public executions were no longer recorded. Today, Deera Square is a changed place. Cafes and restaurants now occupy the area. There is little evidence of its grim past. The echoes of history, however, still resonate for those who know its story. Deera Square remains a powerful reminder of Saudi Arabia’s evolving relationship with its legal traditions.
