In the year 1847, Franz Haniel started a venture that would transform Essen’s landscape forever: Zeche Zollverein Schacht 1/2/8. The location was strategically chosen, near the newly built Cologne-Minden railway line, ensuring efficient transport of the precious black gold: coal. Production at Zeche Zollverein Schacht 1/2/8 began in 1851. However, the initial years were not without challenges. Water seepage threatened the mine’s operation, prompting the construction of Schacht 2 in 1850. These twin shafts were capped with identical Malakow towers, an innovative design that set a precedent for future collieries. By 1890, Zeche Zollverein Schacht 1/2/8 became the leading coal producer in Germany, extracting an impressive one million tons of coal annually. The Zeche Zollverein complex continued to expand with the addition of Schacht 8 in 1900, further increasing its output. Around this time, Zeche Zollverein Schacht 1/2/8 became the central hub for the entire colliery. The year 1907 marked the completion of a new miners’ changing room, solidifying Schacht 1/2/8’s crucial role. The facility underwent modernization in 1964, showcasing its continuous adaptation to technological advancements. Even after its closure in 1986, Zeche Zollverein Schacht 1/2/8 remains a testament to its historical significance. The imposing structures still stand tall, reminding us of the industrial prowess that shaped Essen’s identity. The former washroom now houses the Choreographisches Zentrum NRW, a vibrant center for contemporary dance, symbolizing the colliery’s transformation from an industrial powerhouse to a cultural landmark. The site is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its architectural and historical value. Zeche Zollverein Schacht 1/2/8, with its rich history and enduring presence, offers a unique glimpse into the industrial heart of Essen.
