“Wat Samorakot” is a little different than most temples in Bangkok. It’s not in the heart of the city, but about 40 kilometers west. It’s easy to miss if you are not looking for it. But you need to look for it! Because this temple is unique. It’s not about traditional architecture or opulent decorations. Wat Samorakot is a temple of surprises and symbolism.

Wat Samorakot is a relatively recent temple–it was officially registered in 1985 as the “Dragon Temple”. It’s a real head-turner with the largest structure, a 17-story, 80-meter-high pink tower. To top it all off, there is a gigantic, red-and-green dragon sculpture wrapping around the entire height.

This is no ordinary dragon. It symbolizes the journey from sorrow to happiness and from hell to heaven. It’s a metaphor for the human experience!

Wat Samorakot offers a fun challenge and adventure for visitors: climbing the spiral staircase inside the dragon to the top. There’s a giant Buddha statue you can see along the way, and at the top, you’ll be greeted by the dragon’s head. There you can touch its chin and make a wish. People say it brings good fortune.

Don’t be intimidated by the height! Even though there are 17 floors, it’s doable. In about ten minutes, you can be at the top enjoying the view.

Wat Samorakot is not just about the striking dragon. The entire grounds are brimming with surprising sights. Walk along the paths, and you will find hand and footprints imprinted in the cement. We don’t know the meaning of this, but it sparks our curiosity.

You can find a giant turtle sculpture, too. Don’t hesitate to go inside! There are drums to hit and a few stalls and scriptures.

If you are visiting Wat Samorakot, don’t rush! Take your time to explore the grounds and appreciate the unexpected quirks and symbols. It’s more than just a temple–it’s an experience you won’t forget.
