Santa Sophia Catholic Church was dedicated in 1958. It sits at the foot of Mount Helix in Casa de Oro. Casa de Oro once belonged to the Mission San Diego de Alcala. Santa Sophia parish was established in 1956. The church has become known for some unique features. These features include a tapering bell tower and an egg-shaped structure.
But the most striking feature is inside. Prepare to be amazed by the crucifix. It is the largest indoor wooden crucifix in North America. The crucifix is an impressive 36 feet tall. Some say it’s closer to 40 feet. It is a modern-primitive design. This means it’s new but inspired by the ancient.
The church interior once had a Jet Age vibe. Imagine groovy, expansive, clean lines. Curved entrance tunnels lead into the church. High walls and ceilings meet in a smooth arch. Chandeliers hung above the sanctuary. They added to the mid-century modern feel. The presider’s chair even looked like it came from the USS Enterprise.
But the towering crucifix changed everything. Its rough-hewn presence contrasted the modern design. Candles flank the altar. A Paschal candle stands tall during Easter. Water is blessed at the opening of Mass. It symbolizes life and renewal. These ancient symbols create a powerful mix with the modern architecture.

Sadly, in 2013, a fire damaged the sanctuary of Santa Sophia. Authorities determined that the fire was intentionally set. But the church community persevered. They rebuilt and continued their mission.
