What secrets does the earth hold? Here at the Tzschetzschnower Burgwall, the ground whispers tales of a Slavic settlement that arose around 800 AD. The Tzschetzschnower Burgwall stands as a testament to this early history. It is a remarkable structure, a “Burghübbel” or “Burgjübbel”, a low-lying circular fortification. The Tzschetzschnower Burgwall measures between 60 and 80 meters in diameter. Originally, it stood closer to the Oder River. The changing course of the river likely prompted its relocation further inland, about 300 meters from its original site. Imagine the bustling life that once thrived within these walls. The Slavs who built the Tzschetzschnower Burgwall were part of a larger westward migration. They left their mark on the landscape, not only with the Burgwall, but also with another significant feature, a 300-meter distant rampart. These fortifications served as vital defenses in a time of frequent conflict and territorial disputes. The very name “Tzschetzschnow”, the original name of the nearby village Güldendorf, echoes this Slavic heritage. This name, recorded in various forms like “Cessonovo”, “Cetzenow”, “Tscheczczenow”, “Czetzenow”, and “Zetzenow”, offers a glimpse into the linguistic evolution of the region. The first documented mention of the village, as “Cessonovo,” appears in a 1230 privilege list of the Moritzkloster in Halle. This document records Archbishop Albrecht granting the village, located in the Lebus region, to the monastery, along with other lands and rights. The mention of a “Vogtei” in this document suggests the existence of a later “Freihof,” or free court. The reference to a parish fief and two court districts indicates that Tzschetzschnow, later Güldendorf, was among the earliest settlements established during the German Ostsiedlung, the eastward expansion of German settlers. The Tzschetzschnower Burgwall, though silent now, speaks volumes about the rich tapestry of history woven into this land.
