In the bustling heart of Bangkok, a beacon of serenity rises. This is Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen, a temple steeped in history and alive with spiritual energy. Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen is a royal temple. It was established in 1610 during the Ayutthaya period. Imagine standing before a towering, twelve-sided structure that seems to pierce the sky. This is the Maharatchamongkhon Stupa, completed in 2012 under the guidance of Somdet Chuang Varapuñño, the abbot of Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen from 1966 until his death in 2021. The stupa’s name translates to “a blessed, great land,” a tribute to Thailand’s royal family. This architectural marvel isn’t just a visual spectacle. Inside, it houses a meditation hall, a museum filled with eclectic artifacts, and a relic room. Look closely at the stupa’s design. You’ll notice the influence of both Rattanakosin and Lanna styles, a nod to the diverse architectural heritage of Thailand. The stupa’s top floor houses an emerald glass stupa, radiating an ethereal glow. Step out onto the balcony and let your gaze sweep across Bangkok. Now, shift your focus to the front of the stupa. There you’ll find the breathtaking Phra Buddha Dhammakāya Thepmongkhon, a colossal bronze Buddha image, completed in 2021. This 69-meter tall statue isn’t just a testament to faith, it’s a tribute to the meditation method taught by Luang Pu Sodh Candasaro. Luang Pu Sodh was a revered meditation master who became abbot of Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen in 1916. He rejuvenated the temple, transforming it into a thriving center for meditation and Buddhist education. Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen even has international branches, spreading its teachings to the United States, New Zealand, India, and Japan. Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen is more than just bricks and mortar, it’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith and the legacy of remarkable individuals who dedicated their lives to its preservation. As you leave the temple, carry with you the sense of peace and tranquility that permeates its every corner. Let the memory of Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen serve as a reminder of the beauty and spirituality that await discovery in the heart of Thailand.
