Why did it take over a century for the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist to get its spire? Here we stand, before the magnificent Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. Its story is one of resilience, faith, and a touch of delayed gratification. This mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston has witnessed the city’s trials and triumphs. The original Cathedral of Saint John and Saint Finbar, completed in 1854, was tragically lost to the Great Charleston Fire of 1861. Imagine the devastation. The city, still reeling from the fire, then faced the Civil War and its economic hardships. Decades passed before fundraising efforts could begin anew. Finally, in 1890, the cornerstone for the current Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist was laid. Designed by Patrick Keely, the cathedral was dedicated in 1907. But something was missing. The planned spire, a key element of its Gothic Revival design, was absent due to financial constraints. The cathedral stood spireless for over a century. It underwent repairs in the mid-20th century and renovations in 1982 and 1991. The interior boasts stunning stained-glass windows crafted in France. The pews are carved Flemish oak. The original altars are Vermont marble. The upper church can hold 720 worshippers. The lower church has a capacity of 200. Four chapels offer intimate spaces for prayer and reflection. One chapel even holds a crypt, the final resting place of several bishops. The cathedral’s three bronze bells, cast in France, were finally installed with the spire. They chime, forming an E major chord. In 2010, the long-awaited spire was finally raised. The 167-foot spire, topped with a gilded Celtic cross, completed the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. It stands as a testament to the enduring faith of the Charleston community.
