Founded in 1848 West Bountiful boasts a rich history. James Fackrell Sr a Mormon pioneer and his wife Amy Crumb settled here. They chose this land for its fertile soil and abundant water sources. Other pioneers followed drawn by the promise of prosperity. West Bountiful became a thriving farming community.
The soil proved ideal for crops. One particularly successful crop was the Yellow Sweet Spanish onion. In the 1920s George Mann brought back seeds from a mission. These onions quickly became a local staple. For years hundreds of trainloads of West Bountiful onions were shipped across the United States. Onion Street 800 West became a testament to the town’s agricultural success.
Early settlers built simple homes. Later wealthier pioneers constructed grand mansions. Many of these homes still stand today adding to West Bountiful’s unique charm. Incorporated as a town in 1949 and as a city in 1962 West Bountiful continues to grow. It has a population of around 5800 people today.
