Imagine the ambitious project. It took years of planning and construction. The cost was a staggering US$4.83 billion. But the result is breathtaking. The bridge boasts a longest continuous section of approximately 22.5 kilometers. A significant portion of that stretches above the sea.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link wasn’t always a sure thing. Shenzhen initially tried to join the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project. China ultimately chose a different design. Shenzhen’s connection to Zhongshan became a separate project proposed in 2008 then shelved. It finally gained momentum and was included in Guangdong’s 12th five-year plan in 2011.
Construction started in May 2017. The bridge opened on June 30 2024. The impact was immediate. Travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan dropped to under 30 minutes. This was a huge improvement. The previous journey could take much longer. Congestion did occur in the initial days after opening. Some drivers experienced hours-long delays. Detours to the Humen Bridge were common.
