Dog shit. That’s what sparked the creation of Orient Grove. Dominick Ferro a man born amongst goats and chickens in southern Italy found himself exasperated by the canine waste in a neglected patch of land across from his apartment. This was in the late 1990s a Williamsburg still echoing with Italian and Polish heritage.

Orient Grove wasn’t just another community garden. It was a personal project born from Ferro’s longing for the pastoral simplicity of his youth. He recreated a slice of his childhood a triangle-shaped haven replacing farm animals with roses and hydrangeas. This small urban oasis nestled between buildings found its beginnings in the frustration of dog waste.

The transformation wasn’t easy. Ferro battled logistical hurdles hauling water in buckets since he lacked permission to use a nearby hydrant. He fought poor soil described as the worst dirt in the universe. He navigated bureaucratic red tape aided by a helpful neighbor. Most challenging was the fierce opposition from dog owners who even launched a petition against his garden. Ferro countered the petition. It was discovered they had used fraudulent signatures from the Bronx. The battle lasted months. By 1997 Orient Grove was his.

Over two decades later the garden thrives under Ferro’s care. Towering London Plane trees planted over a century ago cast shade and provide a tranquil atmosphere. The trees are protected by law. Their shade however limits the types of plants Ferro can grow. He prioritizes atmosphere and protection over abundant growth.

Ferro’s Orient Grove became more than a garden. It became a testament to resilience. It is a reflection of a neighborhood transformed. The Italian community that once dominated the area gradually gave way to new residents. Yet amidst this change Ferro’s garden remains a peaceful refuge a constant in a relentlessly changing city. Visitors are welcome to smell the roses rest and enjoy a moment of quiet in this unexpected pocket of paradise. They are welcomed by Ferro himself sometimes late into the night. Christmas lights glow softly amidst the foliage. Ginger ale and beer are shared. This small community garden is a legacy of hard work perseverance and a deep love for the simple beauty of nature.
