Is it me or does the air around us seem to hum with ancient energy? Right here before us stands the New Kathiresan Kovil, a vibrant testament to faith and artistry. This isn’t just a temple. It is a portal to a world of Hindu mythology.

The New Kathiresan Kovil is dedicated to Skanda also known as Murugan. He is the God of War. You will easily recognize it from Galle Road. Just look for the heavily adorned vertical structure.

Kovils are Hindu temples. They are known for their ornate carvings. Sculptures depict various Hindu gods. Look up at the roof’s corners. See Bhairava the Frightful? He is a fierce manifestation of Shiva.

Imagine this temple over a hundred years ago. That is likely when it was built. The men selling garlands at the front gate told me so.

Notice the blend of old and new sections. Some parts boast bright colors. Others gleam with gold paint. The craftsmanship is truly amazing. An artist sculpted these figures with great skill.

Did you know that weddings often take place here? At the back of the premises to the left is the Kathiresan Hall. Further in is Manikka Pillaiyar Kalai Rangam. These halls host many celebrations.

If you wander around the back you will find a surprise. There are cages with love birds and cockatoos. You might even spot a pretty peahen. Temple keepers keep them as pets.

Inside, the temple is spacious. Separate shrines exist for each deity. Visitors bring garlands. These are sold at the gates. Some even offer expensive materials. These adorn the deities.

The New Kathiresan Kovil in Pettah participates in the Vel Festival. This happens in July or August. That is the Tamil month of Aadi. A chariot is carried to the Kathiresan Kovil in Bambalapitiya. The procession includes performers and musicians. Some devotees pierce their faces with spears. This shows their passion.

The temple welcomes visitors every day. Hours are from 5.30 AM to 10.30 AM and 5.30 PM to 8 PM. Fridays and Saturdays are particularly busy.

Remember to dress respectfully when entering. Clean clothes are essential. You must remove your shoes. Consider bringing an offering. Incense sticks or garlands are appropriate.

Photography is not allowed inside the New Kathiresan Kovil. Cows provide milk for religious rituals. Roosters are significant to Lord Murugan’s story. These animals also reside here.

The New Kathiresan Kovil stands as a symbol. It connects Tamil migrant workers to their roots. It is dedicated to God Ganesh. Shrines honor Murugan, Amman, Ganapathi, and Indumpan.

Take a moment to appreciate the vibrant colors. Consider the intricate carvings. Remember the stories they tell. The New Kathiresan Kovil offers a glimpse into a rich cultural heritage. It is a testament to devotion and artistic expression.
