Sankt Bonifatius

In the heart of Kreuzberg, the Sankt Bonifatius Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Sankt Bonifatius, a neo-gothic masterpiece of brick and tile, was born from the needs of a burgeoning Catholic community in late 19th century Berlin. In 1894, the parish of Sankt Bonifatius formed with a staggering thirteen thousand members. The congregation quickly outgrew its existing spaces. Reverend Schlenke, recognizing the urgent need, spearheaded a fundraising campaign in 1901 to build a proper church. The cornerstone of Sankt Bonifatius was laid in 1906. Construction was swift, concluding just a year later in 1907, bringing Schlenke’s vision to life. The Sankt Bonifatius Church miraculously survived the bombings of World War II, its brick walls enduring while the surrounding area suffered devastation. Though the structure remained standing, a fire ravaged the interior. All the furnishings were lost. The stained-glass windows, however, survived. In 1946, Sankt Bonifatius reopened its doors. Services resumed even as the building stood supported by scaffolding. Restoration efforts were extensive, taking twenty years to complete. Finally, in 1966, Sankt Bonifatius was fully restored, a symbol of hope amidst the scars of war. Today, Sankt Bonifatius continues to serve its community, a beacon of faith and a testament to the enduring spirit of Berlin. Its distinctive red brick and tile roof, characteristic of the Baltic neo-gothic style, make it a striking landmark in the Kreuzberg district.
