Have you ever walked past a building and felt a strange pull, an unseen force drawing you closer? That’s exactly how I felt when I first saw Taksin Hospital. Located in Bangkok’s Khlong San District, it stands proudly on Somdet Chao Phraya Road, a testament to the city’s rich history and unwavering commitment to healthcare. This hospital, a beacon of hope for generations of Bangkokians, was established in 1904, originally known as the Cholera Hospital. King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) himself granted permission for its creation, driven by the urgent need to combat infectious diseases like cholera and smallpox. Back then, it was managed by the Metropolitan Sanitation Department, a bold step in a time when hygiene was not as widely understood. In 1937, its operations were transferred to the Bangkok Municipality Administration, and its name was changed to Municipality Hospital. It served as a rehabilitation center, a vital support system for patients from Klang Hospital and Vajira Hospital. But as the years went by, Taksin Hospital evolved, becoming a modern medical institution, offering a wide range of services to the entire community. It was in 1972 that it was renamed Bangkok Hospital, a name that reflected its new role as a comprehensive medical center. And finally, on September 11, 1973, King Bhumibol Adulyadej bestowed upon it the name Taksin Hospital, an enduring tribute to King Taksin, the founder of Thonburi Kingdom, the very area where it stands today. This hospital, a true embodiment of Thailand’s history and innovative spirit, continues to stand tall, a symbol of progress and healing.
