Isn’t it remarkable how a simple patch of land can transform into a vibrant community space? Here at Allée des Jardins, that’s exactly what’s happening. This space is located in Lille-Sud. It is more than just a collection of plants. It represents a community vision taking root.

Allée des Jardins began its transformation in February 2024. This project aims to create an area where people can learn. They can discover and most importantly, do. The final design incorporates feedback from local residents. The Francas association and the Lille-Sud neighborhood council also provided input. The city’s planning department then worked to create the final design in 2023.

Imagine strolling through the soon-to-be-completed square. You enter through an opening on Rue Sylvère Verhulst. Inside you will find an inviting central area. It features a community orchard and a serene pond. Picnic tables invite you to linger. Allée des Jardins encourages relaxation and connection.

For animal lovers, a dedicated caniparc will provide a space for dogs to play. It will feature fun agility equipment. Children and adults alike can enjoy adventure trails. These trails include a Finnish path. There is also a fallen log bridge and a tunnel entrance covered in vegetation. Panels will educate visitors as they pass through a meadow.

Gardeners of all ages can participate in individual and group gardening plots. There is also a dedicated children’s garden. These green spaces will offer a place to grow food and connect with nature. Allée des Jardins is more than just a park. It is an educational and recreational resource.

The project covers over 2200 square meters. It promises something for everyone. It transforms an unused area into a lively hub for the community. Allée des Jardins is scheduled to open in the spring of 2025. It will offer a new space for recreation. It will also serve as a community engagement in Lille-Sud.

While you’re here in Lille, consider visiting the Jardin des Plantes de Lille. It is a short trip from Allée des Jardins. Inaugurated in 1948 the Jardin des Plantes spans almost 11 hectares. Architect Jean Dubuisson and landscape architect Jacques Marquis designed it. It sits on the former southeast fortifications of the city. The garden mixes French and English garden styles. This creates depth and perspective across its lawns and wooded areas.

Look for the central part of the garden. Its design draws inspiration from Versailles. The basins the rose garden and the peristyle create a stunning vista. This aligns with the facade of the Lycée Baggio. The high school was once the Diderot Institute. The original main entrance faced the monumental gate of the Diderot Institute. It opened onto a lawn framed by linden trees.

In the northeast section, you’ll find the most densely wooded area. This area features clearings including the city’s apiary school. Botanical squares display plants by function or habitat. An orangery built in 1952 houses ornamental plants during the winter. Today it serves as a seasonal refreshment bar in summer. Vestiges of an alpine garden can be found to the west. An old playground sits at the far west end, surrounded by large plane trees.

Also look for stone columns from the old Palais de Justice of Lille. They were brought here after its demolition in the 1960s. They now serve as a reminder of the city’s past. The garden and its features are listed as historical monuments since 1997.
