“The Old Gate stands as a silent guardian” might be its motto. This is the story of Tsinghua University’s Old Gate. It is arguably the university’s most symbolic landmark. The Old Gate has witnessed the lives and emotions of Tsinghua people for over a century.

Located on Tsinghua Road, it stands on the university’s east-west artery. This “paifeng” arched structure sees thousands of students and faculty commute daily.

Let’s step back to 1909. The Old Gate was built as the entrance to Tsinghua Xuetang. This was the university’s original name. Qing dynasty official Natong inscribed “Tsinghua Garden” above the main arch. Back then, the gate strictly controlled access. It prohibited entry to unauthorized outsiders.

As the campus grew the walls beside the Old Gate were removed. This allowed for more traffic. The Old Gate was no longer a gate. It became a popular landmark. Incoming freshmen felt they had to take a photo here.

In 1991, Tsinghua alumni worldwide helped restore the Old Gate. It was restored to its former glory. The Old Gate continues to draw crowds.

Through trials and tribulations, the Old Gate stands tall. It is a testament to Tsinghua’s rich history. It embodies the Tsinghua virtues. These are diligence, pragmatism and determination.

The Old Gate is more than just stone. It is a symbol. It is a reminder of Tsinghua’s past, present and future. It inspires all who pass through it. The Old Gate stands as a testament to Tsinghua’s enduring spirit.
