Established on November 9 1989 the Sathon District Office stands as a silent witness to Bangkok’s transformation. Its history is deeply intertwined with the district’s own. Before it became Sathon this area was part of Yan Nawa. The sheer size and growing population of Yan Nawa necessitated a branch office. This branch office served three khwaeng of Yan Nawa. Then came the official establishment of the Sathon District Office.
The name itself is a testament to the canal Khlong Sathon. This canal a vital waterway dug by a Chinese company facilitated public transport. The Chinese owner was later honored by King Chulalongkorn. He received the title Luang Sathon Racha Yut. The canal’s banks eventually became Sathon Road. Even the spelling of Sathon underwent a change. An incorrect spelling was used for a long time before its official correction in April 1999. The former house of Luang Sathon Racha Yut is now a historical landmark. It is known as Sathon Mansion located in the neighboring Bang Rak District.
