“Never Backward” proudly proclaims the motto of New Rochelle. This city is located in Westchester County New York. New Rochelle is a suburb of New York City. It sits approximately 17 miles from Midtown Manhattan. New Rochelle is the seventh-largest city in New York.

New Rochelle’s history stretches back centuries. Indigenous peoples thrived here making use of the area’s resources. By the 17th century the Lenape bands were prominent. In 1654 the Siwanoy Indians sold land to Thomas Pell. In 1688 French Protestants, the Huguenots, settled here. They named it La Nouvelle-Rochelle after their French port of departure.

New Rochelle became a haven for French refugees. The community retained its French character for decades. People from neighboring areas even sent their children to New Rochelle to learn French.

New Rochelle played a role in the American Revolution. General George Washington stopped here in 1775. He was on his way to command the Army of the United Colonies. After the war Thomas Paine received a farm in New Rochelle. It was a reward for his service to the cause of independence.

The 19th century brought change to New Rochelle. New York City saw waves of immigration. Established American families moved to New Rochelle. The Huguenots retained influence through land ownership and businesses.

By 1900 New Rochelle’s population reached 14720. Realty companies bought up farms and estates. Planned residential neighborhoods spread. New Rochelle became known as the “City of Homes”.

In the early 20th century, the Thanhouser Film Corporation was established. This studio filmed “Thanhouser’s Million Dollar Mystery”. It was one of the first serial motion pictures.

New Rochelle continued to grow. By 1930 the population was 54000. New Rochelle was the wealthiest city per capita in New York state. It ranked third wealthiest in the country.
