Did you know Greater Purelight Missionary Baptist Church started with just a small group? It all began on October 31 1986. This followed the ordination of Pastor Darryl W. Broussard at Pure Light Missionary Baptist Church.
Let me tell you more about the history of Greater Purelight Missionary Baptist Church. A small group of people gathered in the fellowship hall. They loved and respected Pastor Broussard. That night he chose his church officers and auxiliary heads. Rose Lewis was Church Clerk. Dorothy Sloan was Usher Board President. Marilyn Davis-Williams was Treasurer. Jacqueline Lewis was Pastor’s Aide President. Lillian Mitchell was Sunday School Superintendent. These founding members are remembered fondly.
The following Saturday saw members and friends preparing the new church. The first service was held on Sunday November 2 1986. It was on Denmark and Hoffman Streets at 11:05 a.m. Sixty-four people attended. This included Pastor’s family from out of town. Nineteen people received the Right Hand of Fellowship. Sis. Dorothy Broussard Sis. Lillian Mitchell and Sis. Charlie Moore led devotion. It rained that day both outside and inside. Despite the rain the Lord poured out His Holy Spirit. The Lord’s Supper was served. Pastor Broussard held Testimonial Services. It was a Spirit Filled Service. Deacon Charles Sanders joined on Sunday November 23 1986. Since then many Deacons have been ordained. Gary Lee Simon was the first Minister added. God has been gracious to this family. Many have become part of the Kingdom of God.
Pastor announced a move on Sunday November 16 1986. He didn’t yet know where. But they were leaving. Joyce Johnson and Joanna Walker found the location at 8802 Kelburn. On Wednesday November 19 1986 a group inspected the future home. Sis. Dorothy Broussard suggested prayer on the grounds. They knew with prayer God’s guidance and Mercy they could have a beautiful church. They believed if God is for us He is more than the whole world against us.
The first Worship Service at that location was held December 2 1986. Pastor Richard Robertson installed Pastor Broussard at 3:30 p.m. The Church Family has been blessed by the Lord since then. Membership grew to over seven hundred. They built three times at the Kelburn campus. Many have come through the doors of Greater Pure Light. The church is known for genuine concern for God’s people.
The Lord blessed them to move again. They asked The Lord to enlarge their territory. He did just that. The first Worship Service at the present site was held on Easter Sunday March 31 2002. Since then they have reached out to the community. They share the Goodness and Love of Jesus Christ. Greater is not only an in-house church. They also believe in community outreach. They have numerous ministries. Greater is a church the whole family can agree on. The Tribe Ministry began in 2004. It helps members connect as family. Pastor is a visionary. Parishioners see his vision and will make it a reality. Greater has mourned the passing of many members. They are confident they rest from their labors. Through the teaching and preaching ministry lives have changed. They always want to be the church where God is. There is never a boring service in this fellowship. To God be the glory.
They have been blessed. By the grace of God they have come a long way. With His help they will continue to strive for excellence. Through this ministry God has birthed six churches. Greater Pure Light currently has eleven Ministers and ten Deacons. All glory belongs to Almighty God.
