Erected in 1935 the Shrine of the Immaculate Virgin stands as a poignant memorial. It faces St Elizabeth’s the girls’ dormitory at Mount Loretto. Mount Loretto was once New York State’s largest orphanage. The orphanage housed over 1000 orphaned children. The Shrine of the Immaculate Virgin was a gift. Katherine and Helen Tracy built it. They honored their brothers Michael and John Tracy. The Tracy family was devoutly Catholic. They made their fortune in shipping. They were known for their generosity. John Tracy received the title Knight of St Gregory. Katherine Tracy left a large sum to charity. The orphanage closed in the 1970s. The Archdiocese of New York sold the land in 1999. Now the land is a nature preserve. St Elizabeth’s was destroyed by arson. The Madonna statue is gone. Now the Shrine of the Immaculate Virgin holds other offerings.
