“What stories could this old bridge tell?” Imagine yourself transported back to the Song Dynasty. The Dazhuang Beidge stands before us a silent witness to centuries of history.

The Dazhuang Beidge is not just any bridge. It is a historic stone arch bridge located in Zhuantang Subdistrict, Xihu District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. Originally known as Zhu Bridge, it has also been called Shangzhu Bridge and Wannian Bridge.

This bridge is a testament to Chinese engineering and cultural heritage. Measuring 28 meters long and 6 meters wide, the Dazhuang Beidge has stood the test of time. Its story began in the Song Dynasty from 907 to 1279.

However, the bridge we see today is largely the result of a reconstruction in 1588 during the Ming Dynasty, under the reign of the Wanli Emperor. Think about the artisans and laborers who meticulously rebuilt this vital crossing.

Local authorities recognized its significance on July 9, 2000. They designated the Dazhuang Beidge as a municipal cultural unit.

Originally called Zhu Bridge, local lore suggests a man named Zhu Qing once shouldered firewood on this path. People then started calling it Shangzhu Bridge to differentiate it from another Zhu Bridge to the north.

The name Wannian Bridge came later. A flood damaged the bridge. Yu Liangzhen, a local official, rebuilt it. He renamed it Wannian meaning “ten thousand years”.

Today, as you stand on the Dazhuang Beidge, consider its long history. It connects not just land but also the past with the present. It embodies the spirit of Hangzhou and the enduring legacy of Chinese culture. The Dazhuang Beidge remains a symbol of resilience.
