Isn’t it remarkable how institutions can evolve? City of Glasgow College is a testament to that. This college wasn’t built in a day. It emerged from the merging of Central College, Glasgow Metropolitan College, and Glasgow College of Nautical Studies in 2010.
City of Glasgow College is now Scotland’s largest college. It is also a leading technical institution. The merger wasn’t easy. But the goal was to create a powerhouse for skills development.
Imagine the discussions. Picture the planning. Envision the collaboration. It took years to bring this vision to life. The idea of merging Glasgow’s city center colleges was conceived long before 2010.
Now, the City of Glasgow College boasts two main campuses. There is the Riverside Campus and the City Campus. The Riverside Campus focuses on nautical studies and engineering. The City Campus is in the heart of Glasgow.
The Riverside Campus first opened in 1969. It underwent extensive rebuilding. It reopened in 2015. Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s First Minister, officially opened it.
The City Campus opened in 2016. Sophie, Countess of Wessex, presided over the opening. Sir Robert McAlpine contracted both developments. Michael Laird and Reiach & Hall were the architects.
Both campuses are architectural achievements. They were even shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize. That is quite an honor.
Before becoming City of Glasgow College, each constituent college had its own history. The Glasgow Corporation founded Stow College of Hairdressing in 1956. It later became the Central College of Commerce and Distribution.
In the 1960s, a new College of Building was commissioned. UK Prime Minister Harold Wilson opened it in 1964. The Glasgow College of Nautical Studies opened in 1969. The Earl Mountbatten did the honors.
Over time, these colleges adapted. They merged and evolved to meet the needs of Glasgow. The City of Glasgow College has a student association. It is known as CitySA.
CitySA represents the students’ interests. It won the College Student Association of the Year Award in 2012. They have a president and vice presidents. They focus on social activities, learning, teaching, diversity, and wellbeing.
City of Glasgow College also has extensive library services. Each campus has a library. They offer print and digital resources. There are spaces for individual and group study.
The Board of Management oversees the college. It includes a chair, vice chair, principal, and other members. Student representatives are also on the board.
The City of Glasgow College continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the needs of its students and the city. The college plays a vital role in Glasgow’s economy. It provides training for city businesses. It equips people with the skills they need to succeed. The City of Glasgow College is more than just a college. It is a key partner in Glasgow’s future.
